Activities at the Department:

Research activities

My area of research is primarily the cryopreservation of fish gametes and related investigations in reproductive biology. Sperm cryopreservation protocols were developed for more than 20 Hungarian and exotic fish species, including sturgeons, cyprinids and several catfish species. Research topics under my supervision extended to investigation of larval malformations resulting from the use of cryopreserved sperm. In the field of reproductive biology I am primarily interested in the activation mechanisms of fish spermatozoa. Additionally, I have experience in the areas of chromosome preparation and chromosome set manipulation techniques (androgenesis and gynogenesis).

Currently, I am involved in several research projects in international cooperation. These include sperm cryopreservation of endangered salmonid species in the river Soča in Slovenia, cryopreservation of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) sperm in cooperation with colleagues from Singapore and investigations of the seminal plasma of percid fish with partners from Poland. I have been the coordinator of the Hungarian partner in the FP7 project CytoThreat (Grant Agreement number 265264) which focused on the fate and effect of various cytostatic drugs in the environment. I have been responsible for the marker-assisted breeding system installed at the Lillafüred Trout Farm. My current project topics include the vitrification of fish sperm as well as the interspecific transplantation of fish spermatogonia.

Other activities

I am the head of the Work Group for Research of the Department, with the task of supervising the research work conducted at the Department, its control and related administration duties. I participate at the aquaculture specialist training offered by the Department, and in the teaching of reproductive biology of fish at the University of Dubrovnik in Croatia. I am currently serving as the vice-chair of the COST Action FA 1205 AQUAGAMETE.
